The 8, located in McMahon Hall, is a multi-use community center where students can create in the makerspace, hit the books in the study lounge, or play in the games area.
The 8 is open to all UW students, UW residents and their guests, as well as UW students enrolled in courses taking place in The 8. The 8 boasts nearly 30,000 square feet of study space, a game room, VR room (coming soon), wood shop, machine shop, classroom space, and student work space.
Support and education
The 8 is the result of a programmatic and monetary investment by UW Housing & Food Services, DXARTS, UW College of Engineering.
With varying degrees of support, provided by a full-time staff member, a graduate assistant, university faculty, and trained student staff, users of The 8 will get help and knowledge transfer from entry-level all the way to professional and research level. Workshops and trainings will be available throughout the year.
DXARTS are partners of The 8, utilizing the space for several course offerings and for student project development and creation. The university’s Student Technology Fund helps purchase equipment for The 8 and creates access for the entire UW student community.
Easy to access
The 8 is open to free access and use for residents of the UW residence halls and UW students. UW faculty and staff can purchase quarterly memberships to gain full access to the space.
All new and prospective users of The 8 shops must complete our User Agreement, which includes an online safety training and quiz. Please note that certain machines and equipment require additional training (ex- the lathe). These trainings help to ensure that members can use the space safely. The User Agreement is available on our registration website.
