The 8

The 8 tools

The 8, located in McMahon Hall, is a multi-use community center where students can create in the makerspace, hit the books in the study lounge, or play in the games area.

Support and education

The 8 is the result of a programmatic and monetary investment by UW Housing & Food Services, DXARTS, UW College of Engineering.

With varying degrees of support, provided by a full-time staff member, a graduate assistant, university faculty, and trained student staff, users of The 8 will get help and knowledge transfer from entry-level all the way to professional and research level.

DXARTS are partners of The 8, utilizing the space for several course offerings and for student project development and creation. The university’s Student Technology Fund helps purchase equipment for The 8 and creates access for the entire UW student community.

Requirements to access

All  users of The 8 shops must complete our User Agreement, which includes an online safety training and quiz. Please note that certain machines and equipment require additional training (for example, equipment in the woodshop and machine shop). These trainings help to ensure that members can use the space safely. The User Agreement is available on our registration website.

Hours of operation: Summer Quarter

The 8 is open 1pm-Midnight daily. The Wood & Metal shop hours vary, please contact the 8 reception desk for the most up to date schedule.
