Husky Grind Coffee Education Program
Dive into Seattle’s coffee culture at Husky Grind, UW Dining’s award-winning coffee program dedicated to exploring one of the world’s most popular beverages!
Husky Grind gives the UW community a chance to explore the complexities of coffee through fun, in-depth and hands-on workshops that dive into history and supply chains, roasting, brewing and sensory development. Workshops are free, open to all UW community members and available to individuals of all experience levels.
Educational Workshops
Husky Grind offers workshops on roasting, cupping, brewing and barista basics, as well as pop-ups throughout the university to showcase the story of our coffee. Check out the schedule below for this quarter’s workshops. If you want to stay in the loop for the next Husky Grind Coffee Education event, add yourself to the mailing list!

Coffee Roasting
Tour the Husky Grind Coffee roasting lab and learn how coffee is roasted firsthand. You’ll get to take home a sample of coffee from a batch you had a hand in roasting!
Coffee Cupping
Learn to use sensory input along with a scoring system to evaluate and compare one or more iterations of roasted coffee, using the same method professional coffee tasters do.
Coffee Brewing
Learn all the variables that are at play when brewing coffee and then brew your own using a coffee brewing device of their choice.
Barista Basics
Go through a condensed version of the training that every Husky Grind Barista experiences! This hands-on approach will teach you the basics of brewing espresso and proper milk steaming and give you a chance to make an espresso drink for yourself.
Pop-ups
Husky Grind’s rotation of coffee pops up at venues across campus from time to time! Catch us at res hall front desks and community spaces to sample our coffee and learn about our educational programs. Learn about terroir environmental factors, how coffee is processed and the story behind the types of coffees we offer.
Private Workshops
Interested in hosting a coffee education event for your on-campus student, faculty or staff group? We offer private sessions of any of our educational workshops and may be able to develop a special event tailored to your group’s interests. To set up your event, contact Ryan Jongeward, the manager for Husky Grind cafes and the Husky Grind Coffee Education Program, at rjonge@uw.edu.

Roastery and Sustainability
Did you know we have a roasting lab on campus? You may have caught a whiff while walking by Husky Grind in Mercer Court. Since 2012, Husky Grind has roasted our coffee beans at the on-campus roastery, contributing to keeping our coffee affordable. During colder months, we roast an average of 1000 lbs of beans for our Husky Grind cafes!
Husky Grind sources beans from three Fair Trade farms:
Through the partnership with quality coffee importers, environmentally conscious packaging and distribution, and a partnership with the UW Farm, Husky Grind upholds UW's commitment to sustainability, while providing high grade coffee at a low price.
Food Seminar Course
Husky Grind periodically partners with The School of Public Health’s Food Systems, Nutrition, and Health Program to teach a food seminar on coffee’s value chain. This seminar examines current food, culinary and food system issues from production, processing and marketing to consumption, nutrition and health.
