A community-focused learning space featuring a high- and low-tech makerspace called The Dabble Lab, as well as a variety of other spaces including the Sound Lab, Gamepods and new Content Creation Studio. Unlock your creativity and forge connections with like-minded peers as you dive into engaging workshops throughout the academic year, transforming ideas into reality together. You can also enjoy the space playing ping pong, pool, using the game consoles and more.

The Labs

Dabble Lab

A high- and low-tech makerspace for collaborative or solo idea development and creative projects.

A studio and practice space with musical instruments and recording equipment for musicians of all types and styles.

If you are NOT an on-campus HFS resident, read and sign our User Agreement

After you have completed the safety training quiz, you will be eligible to register for workshops and classes and reserve work time in the Dabble Lab.

The user agreement and safety training quiz must be completed annually. We require this training to ensure that you can use the maker space safely.

Partnerships 

Area 01 offers outstanding opportunities for classes, workshops and events. Partnering with Area 01 helps bring more engagement with UW students to your department or organization by connecting with them where they live. If you would like to work with us to schedule an event, class, tour, project or anything else, please submit your request via our Perks & Rec Request form, or contact Patrick Heneghan for more information.

Ways to partner with Area 01

Creative events and gatherings: Whatever you can dream—you can do. The 800 sq. ft. space can be configured for anything from conference seating to dinners. 

Academic and learning partnerships: Supporting the academic mission of the UW is a vital part of our mission. We are interested in partnership possibilities with campus academic departments and colleges that can encompass a large range of student learning possibilities.

Registered Student Organization (RSO): Area 01 may be the perfect space for your RSO’s next event. Our diverse resources and flexible and fun spaces can provide your organization the spark it needs for dynamic membership engagement.

Patrick has worked at the UW since 2017 and has served in various roles within HFS. Patrick earned his BA in Psychology with a minor in English and Film studies, from Western Washington University and his M.Ed in Student Affairs Administrations from Western Washington University. Patrick oversees the operations of Area 01 and Fitness Center West.

Dei has worked with HFS as a professional staff member since 2018. Dei earned her BS in Physics from UW and has works closely with the College of Engineering in her current role. In our spaces Dei works to organize and assist with engineering classes, keep machines in peak condition and teaches a summer program for high school students.

Kory has worked at UW since 2021, in a dual role with the College of Engineering and HFS. Kory teaches classes and workshops and oversees the repair and upkeep of equipment in Area 01.
