McMahon Hall Exterior Safety Precautions

Fencing and scaffolding will be installed around portions of the exterior of McMahon Hall. These measures are being put in place to protect residents and pedestrians while a building-envelope specialist evaluates areas of the exterior façade that are showing signs of surface wear. Interior living spaces, building systems, and daily residence hall operations are not affected, and residents may continue using the building as normal.

The most visible changes will include temporary protective structures near portions of the building and clearly marked areas around the exterior where pedestrian circulation may be adjusted. These precautions are designed to ensure that anyone moving around the building remains safe while the specialists complete a more detailed assessment of the façade. Please be assured that these measures are precautionary and McMahon remains a safe community to live in.

As an additional precaution, balcony access at McMahon Hall will remain secured while this evaluation is underway. Balconies will remain closed through the end of the 2026–27 academic year. We recognize that balcony access has been a valued feature of the building, and we understand that this may be disappointing. Safety of residents and the evaluation team is our top priority. The McMahon courtyard patio will also be inaccessible. Residents are welcome to use nearby outdoor spaces such as the Oliver Hall terrace and Denny Field.

We appreciate your patience and cooperation as these safety measures are implemented. If you have questions, please contact Housing & Food Services at hfsinfo@uw.edu
