Budget-Friendly Decorating Ideas for Your Dorm Room
August 19, 2024 by Paige Stanley
We all want to make our residence hall space feel like home. But as a college student, it can be hard to find ways to decorate on a tight budget. Here are some budget-friendly ways to spruce up your room!
1. Print Out Pictures
A great way to make your room feel like home is by simply printing out pictures from your camera roll. No need to spend on fancy prints or framing! Many local drugstores have same-day photo pickup at less than 40 cents per photo. Simply upload your photos to their websites, order and pick them up.
2. Buy Secondhand
In addition to visiting local thrift stores located right on the Ave, check out online marketplaces. Sites such as Facebook Marketplace, OfferUp, LetGo, eBay and more have tons of inexpensive decor and even furniture (and sometimes have things for free). The sites update constantly and there are tons of sellers within the U District.
3. Display Your Clothing
Use your clothing and accessories as decoration by displaying them throughout your room. There are many easy ways to hang accessories on your walls as a budget-friendly way to show off your personality and free up storage! Whether you are a sneakerhead or you love hats, glasses, scarves, jewelry, sports jerseys, etc., find a way to show off your collection and spruce up your space.
4. Showcase Your Hobbies
Similar to displaying your clothes, you can display your hobbies to show off your personality and decorate blank walls. Hang up your skateboard, lacrosse stick or guitar, or display your soccer ball, books or pottery. The opportunities are endless!
5. Make It Yourself
One of the perks that comes with living on campus is access to The MILL, The 8 and Area 01 makerspaces. These spaces provide materials such as 3-D printers, laser cutters, sewing machines and screen-printing supplies. Display your creations in your room for a personal touch.
6. Think Ahead
Every year at Move-out, many of your fellow residents get rid of their old decorations to prepare for the next year. Keep an eye out for items your neighbors may be selling or giving away and save them for next year.
