Dining Healthfully in 2018
We heard you. You have been telling us you want more healthful dining choices in more locations. With the start of the New Year, this is the perfect time to let you know what’s happening.
Introducing Menus of Change
The UW is one of 45 colleges and universities participating in the Menus of Change initiative sponsored by the Culinary Institute of America and Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health. Across campus, we continue to roll out dishes based on a plant-forward food philosophy, a creative cuisine with the accent on fruits, vegetables, whole grains, beans, legumes, soy foods, nuts, seeds, plant oils, herbs and spices. We’re creating delicious meals that also reflect evidence-based principles of health and sustainability. For more information about the initiative, visit Menus of Change.
Wellness Café Opening in Local Point
Tero, a wellness café opening in Local Point this March, will showcase how food can be flavorful, satisfying and healthful. Incorporating the Menus of Change philosophy, Tero will bring a plant-forward approach to food with flair and creativity. Among the many offerings are baked flatbreads topped with sun-dried tomato pesto, bell peppers, fennel, olives, Parmesan and basil, plus the protein of your choice. You will also be able to build your own bowl—choose one green, one grain blend, add a protein and enjoy!
Sweetened Beverage Tax Update
You may have noticed a price increase for sugared beverages on campus. Designed to curb the intake of sugar, Seattle’s Sweetened Beverage Tax went into effect January 1. This tax on sugary drinks such as sodas and sports drinks is actually being directed at beverage distributors, who, in turn, pass the cost increase onto retailers, including UW Dining. For more information, see this FAQ page on the city of Seattle website.
District Market Crafted Coming to Husky Den
We’re excited to introduce a sandwich-based concept called District Market Crafted, which is an extension of our District Market brand. This new concept puts an emphasis on the fast and convenient service of hand-crafted sandwiches made fresh daily—both traditional and fusion in style and taste, toasted if you wish.
