Create the Ultimate Study Environment in your Residence Hall Room

December 9, 2024 by Paige Stanley

As the sun sets earlier and the days get colder, it can be hard to find the motivation to leave your residence hall room to venture on campus to study. Studies have shown that learning space has a big impact on student outcomes. However, many students have a hard time studying in their room because of the temptation to sleep or other distractions. Luckily, there are solutions! Follow these tips to set up your dorm room for productivity and focus.

  • Don’t study in bed!

Separating your study space and relaxation space is very helpful when it comes to productivity while doing homework. It is easier to get distracted by your phone or fall asleep when you are laying down on a comfortable bed. Instead, create a habit of studying at your desk. This will also help your sleep because your brain will only associate your bed with relaxation.

  • Declutter

A cluttered environment can lead to a cluttered brain. Keep your room clean and organized to avoid distractions. A clean space can also reduce stress because you are not worried about other tasks to complete. Further, keep an organized desk space. We suggest adding a few items that bring you joy on your desk, such as photos or knickknacks that remind you of family or friends.

  • Adjust your lighting

Try positioning your desk next to a window to get natural light or invest in a sunlight lamp! Sunlight lamps are especially useful for Seattleites in treating Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) symptoms through emitting UV rays that mimic sunlight. These also help with focus and creating a cozy environment. At the very least, we suggest investing in a desk lamp, so you can turn off the harsh overhead lighting when you need to focus.

  • Create a study schedule

Coordinate with your roommate(s) to create a study schedule. Set aside a few hours during the day dedicated to homework time, so that you do not have disputes over when the room needs to be quiet. Remember to be respectful to your roommates when it comes to studying!

  • Gather supplies

Make sure to stock your room with snacks and study materials, so that you do not have to venture out when you are in a studying groove.
