Tips and Tricks to Combat Cold and Flu Season

January 9, 2025 by Paige Stanley

Winter quarter is notorious for bringing an uptick in colds and flu, and many students find themselves feeling under the weather as the temperature drops. With close quarters in residence halls and busy schedules, illnesses can spread quickly. Not only can this lead to missed classes, but it can also set you back academically. To help protect your health and stay ahead this quarter, follow these simple yet effective tips!*

  • Stay home when you’re sick

If you start feeling under the weather, it’s important to rest. Taking time off not only helps you recover faster, but it also keeps you from spreading germs to others. Be sure to reach out to your professors if you’re feeling sick—this way, you can stay on top of any assignments or classwork even if you miss a few sessions.

  • Prioritize sleep

Sleep boosts your immune system, helping to prevent illness. Aim for at least 8 hours of sleep each night to help your body recover. Establishing a consistent sleep schedule—going to bed and waking up at the same time each day—can make it easier to get the rest you need and keep your immune system strong.

  • Drink water

Cold weather can lead to dehydration, which weakens your immune system. Make sure to drink water throughout the day to stay hydrated, boost your energy and help your body flush out harmful bacteria. Carrying a reusable water bottle can make it easier to sip regularly, even when you’re busy.

  • Eat healthy

A nutrient-rich diet is key to strengthening your immune system. Focus on foods that are packed with vitamins and minerals, such as berries, colorful vegetables, yogurt, fish and lean proteins. Eating a balanced diet will help your body fight off infections and speed up your recovery.

  • Keep your room clean

Germs thrive on surfaces that are frequently touched, like doorknobs, keyboards and remote controls. To prevent the spread of germs, make sure to keep your living space clean. Wipe down commonly used surfaces with disinfectant, wash your sheets regularly and make sure you wash your hands often. Avoid touching your face, especially your nose, mouth, and eyes, to prevent germs from entering your body.

  • Get outside

While it might be tempting to stay inside when you're feeling sick, stepping outside for some fresh air and light exercise can actually help boost your immunity and lift your spirits. Take a short walk around campus - just bundle up in warm clothes. Moving your body and getting natural sunlight can have a positive impact on both your physical and mental health.

  • Manage your stress

Stress can negatively impact your immune system and overall health, leading to more frequent illnesses. To stay healthy this season, it’s crucial to manage stress effectively. Try using a planner to stay organized, avoid procrastination and talk to friends or family about any worries you have. Staying active, practicing mindfulness or doing something creative can also help reduce stress levels and keep you feeling balanced.

By following these steps, you can reduce your risk of getting sick this winter and keep your academic performance on track. Stay healthy, stay proactive, and take care of yourself this season!
