Safety Tips for UW Students

February 28, 2024 by Paige Stanley

The University of Washington is situated in the heart of Seattle, a busy metropolitan city. With urban living comes a greater need for students to be aware of safety risks and prevention measures. Check out this list of tips and resources to stay safe on and around campus.

1. Know Emergency Procedures

It is important to know what to do in case of an emergency. Each residence hall room has an evacuation procedure posted on or near your door. Learn this route in case of a fire or other emergency requiring evacuation.

2. Buddy System

It is a good idea to always let someone know where you are going and when you will be back. A great way to do this is by sharing your schedule, phone location, address, room number, and phone number with your roommates, family, and close friends. In addition, always try to walk with a buddy when it is dark to not only increase your safety, but calm your peace of mind.

3. Use Husky SafeTrip and NightRide

UW has two helpful resources for when you need to get home safely at night. Husky SafeTrip provides a safe vehicle escort with a uniformed security guard to both on-campus and north of campus locations. Dial 206-685-9255 (WALK) to access the service from 6:30 p.m. - 2 a.m. daily. NightRide is a U-PASS sponsored shuttle service with eight pick-up stops across campus. Riders can request a drop off spot within the boundaries between 8 p.m. - 2 am.

4. Sign Up for UW Alert

UW Alert is the University of Washington’s message system that notifies the community of emergencies on campus and within the surrounding neighborhood. The system just recently added text messages in addition to emails. You can sign up and learn more about UW Alert on the website

5. Register Your Valuables

In addition to labeling your belongings in case they are lost, UWPD provides registration services for valuable items. Register your bicycle and electronics with UWPD to help with recovery in the event that they are stolen. It is a good idea to make a record of the description, serial numbers, and photos of your valuables. Report all thefts to the UWPD immediately at 206-685-UWPD (8973)/TTY 206-543-3323.

6. SafeCampus

SafeCampus is the University of Washington’s violence-prevention and response program. They offer resources such as 24/7 crisis support, assault or harassment cases, verbal or online threat protection, and reports of inappropriate behavior from students, staff, and faculty members. Call 206-685-7233 to get support.

7. Always Carry Your Husky Card

Your Husky Card serves as your building key, debit card, and identity. Make sure to always carry it on you and keep it secure. Do not let anyone in your residence hall without having to scan their own Husky Card and do not loan your card to anyone.
