What is Available to Me as an Off-Campus Resident?

January 2, 2024 by Paige Stanley

We know that not everyone has the capacity to live on-campus as an HFS resident. But, even as an off-campus resident, plenty of our amenities are available to you as a UW student. Read more to learn what these amenities are and how to access them!

Your husky card is your key to all of the great resources that UW has to offer. With this ID, not only can you access amenities from UW Libraries, Recreation, Transportation, etc. but HFS services too. UW Students can visit The MILL and The 8 for free as well as Area 01 for a fee. Before visiting any of these makerspaces, make sure to complete the Makerspace Training Quiz and read and sign the User Agreement. You can also register for workshops and classes to each of these locations. Learn more about each space below:

1. The MILL: Located in McCarty Hall, The MILL is a vibrant hands-on workspace cultivating creativity, collaboration, and education. Users can choose to work on their own or gain insight from two full-time staff members as well as student staff. Some of the technology available are 3-D printers, sewing and embroidery machines, a kiln, laser cutter, and more. Some of these classes available include Intro to Embroidery and Intro to Resin Printer. Open daily, come build your skills and meet other creatives!

2. The 8: Located in McMahon Hall, The 8 is a dining hall turned makerspace and community center. This space is the ultimate hub for students seeking innovation and collaboration. Whether you are looking for a new study spot, somewhere to hang out with friends, or looking for a creative outlet, The 8 has it all. There are industry standard Metal and Wood Shops with top-of-the-line equipment. Some of the classes offered include Open Shop hour: 1:1s, General Shop Safety Training, Intro to Milling, and a Pool Tournament.

3. Area 01: Located in Maple Hall, Area 01 is a community-focused learning space with Dabble, Sound, Image, and Game labs. To access these labs, UW students can pay a user fee of $15 per day, $25 per quarter, or $40 for a summer membership. The Dabble Lab is a high- and low-tech makerspace for creative projects. The Sound Lab is a music studio and practice space. The Image Lab is a video production and editing studio for all types of visual arts, including videography and photography. The Game Lab is a gaming center with video games, pool, foosball, and more. Some of the classes offered at Area 01 are Intro to 3D printing and Sewing Tech 1:1s.

In addition to these makerspaces, UW students can also eat at any on-campus dining location using their husky card or debit or credit card. Stop by one of our many restaurants, cafés, and markets for a convenient and delicious meal. These dining locations are a great place to meet new students and get some studying done in between classes. UW Students can also get a sweet treat from Frost Bite! Located in Madrona Hall, Frost Bite is a student volunteer run ice cream stand offering large scoops for small prices.

All UW Students also can reserve a meeting or event space in a residence hall. HFS has over 15 rooms available to reserve, able to accommodate events of all types and sizes.
